  • Derby Grange Golf & Recreation Center: 13075 Derby Grange Road, 556-4653. Offers three youth baseball fields, primarily for Little League play, a remote-control track and a nine-hole golf course. Derby Grange also offers a driving range, batting cage and miniature golf. A party pavilion is available for group parties.
  • Dubuque Girls Independent League Fields: 905 Julien Dubuque Drive. Five softball fields used for the Dubuque Girls Independent Softball League.

  • McAleece Park & Recreation Complex: Located on Adm. Sheehy Drive on Chaplain Schmitt Island, 589-4263. The park has three lighted softball diamonds; John Petrakis Field - a lighted regulation baseball field with bleacher seating - two regulation adult soccer fields, playground equipment and barbecue grills. A skate park also is available.
  • Cedar Cross Golf: 1095 Cedar Cross Road, 582-7888. Offers volleyball courts, indoor miniature golf facilities, an indoor driving range and a bar and grill.
  • Veterans Memorial Park: On Northview Drive, off Kane Street near Dubuque Wahlert High School, 589-4263. Offers three softball diamonds, tennis courts, disc golf and play area.

  • T.J.'s Bent Prop Lounge and Marina: 780 Harbor Drive, East Dubuque, Ill., 815/747-8860. Features a bar and restaurant with outdoor deck seating overlooking the Mississippi River. Offers boat slips, courtesy docks, boat storage and winterizing. Pontoons available for rent.
  • Dubuque Marina and Yardarm Riverfront Bar and Grill: Eagle Point Extension, 582-3653. The marina has a restaurant and lounge for boaters in addition to winterization and winter storage, as well as summer dockage, for boats.
  • Dubuque Yacht Basin and RV Park: 1630 E. 16th St., 556-7708. The Yacht Basin offers docks, boat sales and repairs, and a variety of storage methods. The RV park offers seasonal campsites with power and water. A heated pool, showers and laundry facilities are located on the property, which also is the site of Catfish Charlie's restaurant.
  • Finley's Landing: 24500 Finley's Landing Road, Sherrill, Iowa, 552-1571. This 120-acre marina and campground offers primitive and modern camping facilities with electrical hookups, flush toilets and shower facilities. The grounds have hiking trails and pavilions for rental.
  • Frentress Lake Marine Center Inc.: 830 W. Gill Road, East Dubuque, Ill., 815/747-3155. The Marine Center offers a gas dock facility on the Mississippi River with overnight dockage, summer/winter storage, winterizing and boat slip rental.
  • Massey Marina: 9400 Massey Marina Lane, seven miles south of Dubuque on U.S. 52. This 11-acre park offers camping, a boat ramp, a pavilion and playground, showers, a Laundromat and two harbors.
  • Mid-Town Marina: 285 Fifth St., East Dubuque, Ill., 815/747-3310. Mid-Town offers winter storage, dockage, marine accessories, service and sales, a full dock and pump-out station. The lounge and restaurant is open March 1 through Nov. 1 and offers summer Sunday breakfast buffets. The pavilion and patio are for rent on a reservation basis.
  • Miller-Riverview Park: Adjacent to Dubuque Greyhound Park & Casino, 1800 Adm. Sheehy Drive, 589-4238. Open April-October, this 20-acre park and campground features primitive camping facilities with electrical hookups, showers and rest rooms. There is a marina with a boat launch less than a block away. Fishing is allowed.
  • Mud Lake Park: 22312 Golf Lake Road, 552-2746. Open April-November, this 14-acre park and campground offers modern camping facilities with 42 sites with electrical, 50 amp service hookups and showers. There is a marina with a boat launch. Walking and hiking trails also are being developed.
  • Swiss Valley Park Campground: 13768 Swiss Valley Road, 556-6745. Open April-November, this 60-acre park and campground features modern camping facilities: a dump station, shower house, flush toilets, electricity hookups and tent sites. Trout fishing is allowed. Also, there are hiking and cross-country skiing trails on the 500-acre nature preserve.

 

Cross-Country Skiing

  • Bunker Hill Golf Course: 2200 Bunker Hill Road, 589-4261.
  • Eagle Point Park: Shiras Avenue, 589-4263.
  • Heritage Trail: Three miles north of Dubuque on U.S. 52 at Rupp Hollow Road, 556-4372. Extending from Dubuque to Dyersville, Iowa, this 26-mile trail follows the old Chicago Great Western railroad bed. Often used for hiking and bicycling.
  • Lacoma Golf Course: 8080 Timmerman Drive, East Dubuque, Ill., 815/747-3874.
  • Louis Murphy Park: Kerrigan Road and South Grandview Avenue, 589-4263.
  • Mines of Spain: 2 miles skate skiing and 5 miles classical skiing, all groomed, 556-0620.
  • Swiss Valley Park: 13768 Swiss Valley Road, 556-6745.

 

Dancing

  • Dubuque County Fairground: 14583 Old Highway Road, 588-1406. The fairground hosts a variety of weekly dances and occasional orchestra music. Call between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays to confirm ballroom dance times.

 

Downhill Skiing

  • Chestnut Mountain Resort: 8700 W. Chestnut Road, Galena, Ill., 815/777-1320 or 800/397-1320, Web site: wwwchestnutmtn.com. The resort has more than 17 downhill runs up to 3,500 feet long with 475-foot vertical drop, five chairlifts, three surface tows, one magic carpet and 100 percent snowmaking over 100 acres. The snowboarding park has a half pipe. Also provided is a large rental shop that includes apparel and repairs. A ski school, snowboarding lessons and night skiing also are available. Chestnut Mountain is a four-season resort.
  • Sundown Mountain: 16991 Asbury Road, 556-6676 or 800/397-6676; Web site: www.sundownmtn.com. The ski area has 21 runs up to 4,000 feet in length with a 475-foot vertical drop and five chairlifts. With night lighting and up to 500 tons of snowmaking every hour, Sundown is equipped to serve beginner, intermediate and advanced skiers. Skiing and snowboarding lessons available.

Public Golf Courses

  • Bunker Hill Golf Course: Bunker Hill Road, 589-4261. The 18-hole course is par 69. Club, cart rental and lessons are available. There is a pro shop and a clubhouse on the grounds.
  • Lacoma Golf Course: 8080 Timmerman Drive, East Dubuque, Ill., 815/747-3874. Lacoma has several courses: one 18-hole, par-71 course; one nine-hole, par-34 course; one nine-hole, par-35 course and one nine-hole, par-27 course. Club and cart rental and lessons are available. Reservations recommended. There is a pro shop, bar and grill.
  • The Meadows Golf Course: 15766 Clover Lane, Asbury, Iowa, 583-7385. The par 72 course covers 6,700-yards. It was built on 160 acres, 35 of which are prairie grass. The Meadows also has banquet facilities, a bar and grill and a golf shop.

It also offers a fitness loft that includes cardio equipment, Nautilus weight machines and free weights. A variety of group fitness classes also are offered as well as personal training, Child care is available. Members pay a one-time initiation fee as long as membership and monthly dues and court fees are maintained. It is open daily, year-round.

  • Dubuque Floodwall Trail: In two sections: 16th Street-Shiras Avenue extension; and by the parking lot at the end of Terminal Street-the end of the floodwall at the end of Maus Lake, Dubuque. The 4-foot-wide asphalt trail offers approximately two miles of terrain for hiking, biking, snowmobiling and accessing fishing points on Maus Lake.
  • Riverwalk: Located in the Ice Harbor behind the Grand Harbor Resort and Waterpark.
  • Leisure Services Department: 2200 Bunker Hill Road, 589-4263. Offers summer activities for all ages. Includes volleyball, basketball, softball, tennis, golf and swimming lessons.
